Frequency of Transfusion-Transmitted Virus Infections
While testing has significantly reduced the risk for transfusion-transmitted cases of AIDS (via HIV transmission) to about 1 in >1,000,000; and reduced transfusion-transmitted cases of hepatitis (via transmission of HBV and HCV) to a range between 1 in 100,000 to 1 in 1,000,000; this is not the case for those viruses for which testing is not currently performed. These include emerging viruses known to be transmitted through blood transfusion such as chikungunya, dengue and West Nile virus. In the case of an epidemic, the number of transmissions for these viruses could be as high as 1 in >1,000 (S. Kleinman. Transfusion 2015).
