Why are bacteria an issue?

The transmission of bacteria via transfusion is primarily of concern for the transfusion of platelet concentrates (PC). This is due to the storage conditions of PCs as they are stored at room temperature for up to seven days (depending on country-specific regulations). Some bacterial strains can grow to very high titres during storage even when initial titres are below the limit of detection.
