Preventing infections

The INTERCEPT™ Blood System demonstrates effective and reliable pathogen inactivation for a broad spectrum of known and emerging pathogens, preventing transmission to patients of:

  • Known viruses such as HIV, HBV, and HCV for which blood donations are screened, but which can be transmitted if the donor donates in the early stage of infection (window period).
  • Emerging viruses such as Zika, WNV, chikungunya and dengue, for which blood donations are not yet screened, or where screening tests are not yet available to blood centres.
  • Spirochetes and protozoa for which blood donations are not always screened, or where screening tests are not yet available to blood centres.
  • Gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria which can cause severe bacterial sepsis including fatalities.

When transfusing INTERCEPT-treated platelet concentrates, you know you are doing the utmost to protect patients from a broad spectrum of known and emerging pathogens.
